Parupurundai khuzhambu - for a change from routine sambar.

Parupurundai kuzhambu is made occasionally when a rich sambar is expected in the menu.No vegetables is required for this sambar as it is made only with dal. Though it requires some home work, at the end its taste nullifies everything. Let see its preparation .
INGREDIENTS 
Toor dal 1 cup (approx. 50 g)
Channa dal 1/2 cup (approx 25g)
Tamarind small lemon size
Red chilli 2 ( or according to one's spice level can be added more)
Fenugreek 1tsp
Mustard 1tsp
Asafoetida 1 pinch
Cumin seed 1 tsp
Urud dal 1 tsp
Oil for cooking
Rice flour for dusting
Sambar powder 2 table spoon
Salt to taste

Soaking time 30 mins
Preparation time 25 mins
Serves 4

Preparation
Wash both the dal and soak for 30 mins with red chilli

Soak tamarind in warm water for 10 mins. Add 200 ml water to extract tamarind essence and set aside.
Drain the water from dal and add to mixie.Add turmeric powder salt required for dal,cumin seed and grind to fine paste without adding water.
Heat a pan. Add 1 tablespoon cooking oil. When it is hot add 1tsp mustard seed,urud dal and remaining cumin seed curry leaves and allow to pop.
Add the grinded dal and saute until all the water evaporates.
Remove and allow it cool.
In a heavy bottomed pan add 2 tsp cooking oil and heat it. Once it is hot add Mustard seed,fenugreek, Asafoetida one by one.
Once they pop add tamarind extract and bring to boil.
Add sambar powder and mix well and add curry leaves and allow to boil.if the dal are cool,make a small lemon size ball and dust it with rice flour. 
Drop the ball one by one in the hot boiling sambar(4 balls at a time). The dal balls after cooked will come to the top layer of sambar.
Remove the balls and set aside. Repeat for all balls .The final set ball can be left in the sambar it self.

Sambar is ready. 
While serving on rice first add sambar and then add the balls boiled in the sambar.
Separately we can enjoy the dal- sambar balls also.
